Operating – Day 4

Day 4 in the OR and on the ward! Physio has been working tirelessly in the ward to discharge patients and is usually the last to leave the hospital at night. This morning we learned they discharged 13 patients yesterday!!! Amazing!!!

It is always special when a patient has such success with a surgery that they return to get their other hip done. A 16 year old girl came back to us this year asking for us to operate on her other hip. This year she returned with her mother, who also needs a new hip. Mother and daughter own 2 cows and sell 5L milk/day to eke out a living. They only have each other to rely on and live hand to mouth. Sadly, this is an all too common situation. The choice was made to give this young lady a new hip this year and improve her quality of life. Her surgery went well and she has begun the long road to recovery. Her spirits remain high, and the discomfort is worth the outcome.

Our pediatric doctor sees several small patients for assessment daily. A 10 month old little girl came with her mother in a proper harness! The baby had been in the sling for 2 months and the XRays showed her little hips were doing well! Her family will continue to use the harness. A small bit of education coupled with the right resources will enable the little girl will develop her hips correctly and not require surgery! Paying it forward every day by the Team!
