Welcome to the True North Mission Society’s 2020 Mission Blog.
45 True North Missions volunteers are preparing for another successful mission to Ecuador set to depart February 18 and return March 1, 2020.
As we look forward to this mission we are hopeful for a large number of patients to serve…similar in number to the 42 families helped during Mission 2019.
Thank you to all our supporters for their generous donations throughout the year making the mission possible.

A small group of team members stayed back in Cuenca on Friday to finish off 3 days of meetings with the Club Rotario and the Ministry of Health regarding the progress of the hip dysplasia and cervical dysplasia screening programs. As well, there was a conference to share orthopedic medical knowledge. Some of the team […]
Last Saturday, we mentioned that we were excited for one of our previous patients, Freddy, to come visit our team at the hospital and catch up with him and his wife. This morning we had that chance as Freddy came up to the ward and surprised us around 10 am! In 2017, Freddy who had […]
There is a great feeling of accomplishment across the team as we begin packing up the equipment in the core – the storage and office space that Santa Ines has set aside for us for the duration of our stay in Cuenca. Just because we are packing up does not mean the team is done […]
Our last afternoon in the operating rooms went extremely smoothly! We even had a visit from the Cuenca newspaper, El Mercurio, who is doing a story on the mission and the Rotary’s involvement. Everyone is very positive and the team has found a groove over the course of the last 2 days. We have been […]
Today is the last day of surgeries here at Santa Ines! At breakfast this morning it was hard to believe how fast the mission has gone by as we reviewed the plan for the upcoming day. So far, we have completed 34 surgeries and discharged 16 of those patients. Today we are at capacity in […]
With 3 full days in the hospital behind us, the team has become more efficient and effective while working in Santa Ines hospital. Each day, we have ironed out small issues that have allowed us to focus more on the treatment and less on logistics throughout the day. One outcome from these incremental changes has […]
The 3 ORs were open to the mission all afternoon. This allowed the team to work hard all day and finish 9 surgeries. The second and last PAO of the day started around 4:30 pm. Last night was another late night as we try to help as many patients as possible. To ensure the team […]
This morning the mission was off to it’s fastest start yet. This is the first time that we have had 3 operating rooms available at the same time, and the team have taken full advantage. The largest bottleneck yesterday was the lack of ORs to perform surgeries in. So far this morning 4 patients have […]
One of the greatest parts of the mission is beginning to see the impact that we are having on the people of Ecuador. The team is here to find and treat patients with the ultimate goal of improving their quality of life, and this also often means there are huge effects on the people around […]
After yesterday’s warmup, today is slated to have much more OR time and 13 potential surgeries. Our team once again met for breakfast bright and early, followed by reviewing cases and updates from each working group. Being such an integral part of the mission, our local doctor, Dr. Manuel, was presented with a small gift […]
